“I don’t even think it’s been a conscious choice of mine. I’ve only known one way to work and it’s been to follow, you know…my mind goes with the wind and where it goes I follow…” - David Scher

“I love studio practice” - Dona Nelson

Some artists go into the studio with an open end. These artists value their commitment to the studio as a venue for exploration and risk taking. Their avenue toward fresh and original results requires dispensing with a carefully devised plan of action. That is not to say that restrictions and specificity are not in play. Even artists who surrender to accident and surprise still enjoy setting complex limitations and devising systemic parameters. Their joy in the studio, in striking a balance and/or duking-it-out between strategy and reckless abandon is evident in their work.

It is a fitting time to celebrate this mode of working. The economy is down, and no one needs to be locked into thematic production to satisfy the market’s expectations. The instability of an uncertain economy has benefits in the studio. Artists can do what they want -as they should be doing all the time- but sometimes forget when the stress of deadlines and financial pressure takes freedom away.

Pakistan Now: Kurt Dietrich Wilberding
Curated by Parlor Antics

In the spring of this year, photographer Kurt Dietrich Wilberding
returned from his first trip to Pakistan—a country that brought on new
challenges photographically from his recent work for The Wall Street
Journal covering national events, such as the 2008 primaries and the
recent finance crisis on Wall Street. The images from this show
document some of the intimate and daily struggles that take place
behind the headlines of Pakistan’s escalating violence.

Currently on view at Fun Times is the Pass it Forward… from the Parlor Antics website:

To kick things off our first exhibition Pass it Forward aims to be a welcoming and intimate gathering. As Parlor Antics was not envisioned as a gallery space, but a meeting of like-minded people more in the spirit of an artist run salon, four artists were chosen to include one piece of work. Those four artists were then each asked to pick one artist of their choosing to also include.  The exhibition will take place at Fun Times, located in the Park Slope/Gowanus area of Brooklyn.  The artists participating are: Rachel Beach, Julie Kirkpatrick, Andrew Hunt, Eric Hibit, Shannon Lucy, Todd Fisher, Roy Stanfield, Julia Rommel, and Alexa Forosty.

We’re having a lot of fun at Fun Times these days and it’s time to lauch our new site.

Please stay tuned to info on upcoming events, the artists we love and more.
